From Multitool to Masterpiece: The Evolution of Flowable Resin

Every good toolbox has a multitool — the one instrument that can do almost anything and often rescues us from disaster. In our material drawer, that instrument is flowable resin. For years it was quietly relegated to liners, sealants and minor repairs; a convenient helper, but rarely the star of the show. That story has changed dramatically.

This lecture traces that evolution — from a weak, wear-prone convenience product into a strong, aesthetic and genuinely multi-purpose restorative. Today’s flowables can match universal composites for strength and wear resistance while remaining simple to place and adapt. Its new versatility is quietly reshaping the way we approach everyday direct restorations.

But the real excitement lies at the other end of the spectrum. Injection moulding — arguably the most talked-about technique in dentistry today — has the ability to turn a planned wax-up directly into finished restorations. It’s most compelling use is in the severely worn dentition: rebuilding worn teeth in an additive, minimally invasive way that restores function and aesthetics, conserves tooth structure, and offers a faster, more affordable alternative to conventional indirect rehabilitation.

Aims & Objectives

  • Understand how flowable composites have evolved from simple liners into strong, multi-purpose restoratives.
  • Recognise the expanded, evidence-based indications for modern flowables and where they now rival universal composites.
  • Select the right flowable for everyday and more complex restorative situations.
  • Apply the injection-moulding approach to manage severe tooth wear as a minimally invasive, additive treatment.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will leave with a clear framework for selecting and handling contemporary flowable composites, and a practical, repeatable approach for using them — from the single small restoration to the full injection-moulded rehabilitation of the worn dentition.

This CPD course meets the criteria for the GDC’s development outcomes C.
